The Numbers
Social media has really taken off in the past few years, with platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, Pinterest and You Tube seeing phenomenal growth in popularity.  Facebook, as an example, had but a handful of members when it was launched in 2004 – today it has almost 1.9 billion. Experts predict that by 2020, about 2.95 billion people will be be using social media.  That’s half the population of the world!

As well as more isolated activity such as that above, some companies will engage in a social media campaign.  This differs from the above in that it is much more focussed and coordinated.  To be more focused, the campaign has to have a specific goal or objective.  This could be to enhance brand recognition, improve sales, elicit feedback or simply increase site traffic.

Who?
The type of companies who use social media marketing is, as you’d expect, wide and varied.  It is something that pretty much any size of company can undertake, of course, with global giants such as Oreo, Nike, Heinz, Coca-Cola and Clairol all having had successful social media campaigns recently. However, it’s not just for such behemoths with Linkedin, the social media for business experts, highlighting that over 80% of small to medium businesses used social media in some form, and of those, 95% used it for marketing.
